This is a portrait of my brother, I wanted to capture his disassociation with the world going on around him while he was concentrating on his phone. I used many thin layers of oil paint on smooth wooden board which helped me to create a detailed and realistic yet naïve portrait, and used brushes and my hands to move the paint around as this creates exciting, unexpected results, and I feel I am adding a part of me to the mark making, which then adds more depth to the finished painting. The portrait is painted in realistic detail and stands out against the simple bold bright graphic line that indicates the edge of the table which adds intensity and depth.

This piece draws on history in a number of ways, the beauty of the mass-produced object being one of the first things you notice. Each piece of clay tobacco pipe in the box is a piece of history that was lost and has now been found. History has a way of highlighting mistakes that have been made, making us question what we have been told. Chesterfield cigarettes once had an advertising campaign that claimed they were 'just as pure as the water you drink', showing that what we're told is good for us is not always in our best interest. Those who want to control us would have us believe the most farcical things to maintain their power.

The Glastonbury collage

Cut and torn paper collage

This collage has been created as a timeless tribute to the world famous Glastonbury festival. I have tried to capture the very essence, the warmth, the long summers evening in beautiful Somerset. The Band on stage is fictional (some of whom are from a shampoo advert) whereas the crowd includes acts from previous years. For a sense of scale, note that the first 4 lines of dots are whole punched pieces of paper- the rest are cut by hand to create a sense of perspective and depth. The crowd have been plucked from magazines as they come, as we're the flags.
