Landscapes provide intriguing subjects for my work. I paint mostly in oils on canvas, and enjoy using different colour 'systems' to explore the motif. An interpretation of the chosen subject through colour is an important aspect of my style, and I find oils the best medium for this. The rich quality of the paint, combined with the gestural nature of oil brushes, inspire me. Quite often I will use a seemingly random colour to draw in the composition, but in practice it is always one chosen to enhance the painting. I like to overdraw using that same colour about half way through the work. I find this useful to re-establish the focus and tighten the composition. At present I am involved with making a series of paintings under the collective title 'The Painted River'. They explore a river journey which took a week by boat, from Ely up to Denver Sluice and back again, and then towards Earith and back to Ely once more. Two of my submissions are from this series.
I am mainly self taught but also attended art courses at Homerton College Cambridge. I have shown work at various locations in and around East Anglia , as well as further afield, London and Hampshire.
