Statement
My sculptures explore the delicate nature of life and the pressing environmental concerns that surround us. Through my work, I aim to capture the essence of vulnerability and resilience, inviting viewers to contemplate the fragility of existence and the urgent need for preservation.
Drawing from my upbringing in Cyprus, I find inspiration in the captivating beauty of the Mediterranean region. Its earthy qualities and vibrant colors permeate my sculptures, evoking a sense of connection to the land and its inherent significance. Additionally, living in rural Wiltshire has offered me a different perspective, allowing me to incorporate elements of the countryside's tranquility and serenity into my creations.
Working primarily with clay, plaster, wire, and cement fondu, I employ these materials to convey a sense of honesty and thoughtfulness in my artwork. Each medium brings its own unique qualities, allowing me to experiment with textures, forms, and structures that embody the essence of my artistic vision.
Deeply rooted in my background interests in ancient history, mythology, and storytelling, my sculptures aim to bridge the gap between the past and the present. They serve as vessels through which narratives unfold, drawing upon centuries of human experiences and collective wisdom. By intertwining these historical and mythical elements, I invite viewers to engage with their own personal stories and reflections.
Through my sculptures, I aspire to create a dialogue about the delicate balance between humanity and the environment, urging viewers to contemplate their role in safeguarding the precious world we inhabit. By instilling a sense of awe, empathy, and responsibility, I hope to inspire positive change and a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all life.
Biography
My practice as a sculptor came quite by chance via a meeting with an artist in 2018.That one conversation reignited a life long passion for craftsmanship and sculpture that had been put aside after the early death of my father. The in between years were not wasted,
I spent them as a professional graphic designer in the heart of London working with top brands, a fulfilling and interesting career.
As a child growing up in Cyprus, I was surrounded by relics and archaeological finds that were literally strewn on the ground as we played, which instilled in me a deep interest in mythology, and history. It was the days when much of the ancient world was still yet to be catalogued and discovered. That fascination, along with the inspiring Mediterranean tradition of creating by hand inspires my work.
During my teen years I spent every spare moment drawing and painting and despite my careers teacher saying that as a colour blind student an artistic career was not recommended, it made me more determined to go to art school! So I took myself to London to seek a wider perspective and carved a very successful career as a graphic designer. After a decade working at top level design agencies I started my own business and worked with clients in the travel and environmental industries, winning several design awards.
Looking back it was a pathway that echoed with my love of natural ways of living and being. I embraced computer technology but began to seek ways outside work of expressing my connection with nature and found it in soapmaking. After a chance meeting with a sculptor from the Bath Sculpture Group I joined and was mentored by Royal College of Art sculptor Susan Larner. She opened up a new world to me - the world of clay and raw materials. I had come full circle.
I work at my studio here in the NationalTrust village of Lacock where I have a small gallery and am available for commissions.
