I select stones with which I have a strange affinity; sensing either a movement or form, as though the stone has a kind of personality. I work closely with the rock, following its form, grain and colour until I reach a kind of skin, and the sculpture takes on a life of its own. Carving is for me is instinctive, it’s my language and a convergence of my being and faith.
Deborah is a multiple award winning professional contemporary sculptor who specialises in stone. She discovered her aptitude for carving in her middle years at an arts festival.
Deborah 's carving honours the rock by following its natural shape, grain and colour. She carves in synergy with inspiration from all aspects of life, her being and beliefs until she reaches a kind of skin and the piece takes on a life of its own. Her pieces are emotive and cover the spectrum of human emotions from pain to joy. She carves indoor and outdoor pieces from a wide variety of stones creating both abstract and figurative works.
Notable sales are to Gloucestershire NHS Trust and the United Nations Chair of the antitorture subcommittee. She has exhibited widely including the Women's Society of Artists exhibition at the Mall Galleries, Canwood Gallery, RWA, SWAc, Delamore Arts and the OXO Gallery on London’s Southbank.
Deborah is a founder member of both the Cotswold Sculptors Association (2017) and Gloucester Contemporary Artists (2023). She is based at Gloucester City works; the site of an old shirt factory where she tutors 3D stone carving courses, for all levels of ability, and works closely with her clients to produce commissions.
